Energy for Life

How’s your energy levels? I’d like to explore some simple methods for ensuring that you have enough energy to create more of the vitality you crave, to live a fulfilling and happy life, from now and into your twilight years. We have one body, that houses your essence, to last a lifetime. Your body is a miracle. Just stop for a minute to appreciate it. Yes, I’m referring to the one you were given, not those unrealistic, photoshopped versions we see on social media and magazine covers.  If we are tired and feeling unwell, every aspect of our life is affected. This is true at any age. We have desired goals and pleasures and yet, once we feel under par, simple tasks grow in stature and even our energy for fun dwindles. Our temper and patience fray and our relationships become strained.

What does “ENERGY FOR LIFE” mean to you? For me it means being available as a wife, doing the sports I love to do like rocycle, roller-skating and boxing, and my ability to think clearly so I can perform at my best as your chiropractor.

It is so important that you manage your energy. You have several energy systems operating in your body and they are holistic in nature, in that one system affects the other. Think of your physical, mental and emotional energy.

Since I am a chiropractor I focus on the body. The framework of the body is one of the most overlooked pieces to your energy puzzle. Most people understand that good food, quality sleep, exercise and hydration influence their energy levels, but consider for a moment the framework of your body. If the posture of  your body doesn’t have a sense of ease and grace, you miss a foundational component of your energy level maths.

A posture that “hangs” or even a forward head posture makes your body lose energy because it costs the body a lot of extra energy to hold itself up against gravity. Cosmetically of course you don’t want to grow old with rounded shoulders, but functionally way more is at cost than simply the way you look. With proper long term spinal hygiene you don’t need to age like this.

Every 0.5 cm that your head is carried forward beyond normal, costs your brain exponentially more energy to hold yourself up. Since we spend a lot of time on devices, your forward head carriage tendency needs to be managed to preserve your energy.  Don’t shy away from the fact that the posture on the left has the potential to affect all energy systems of your body because your spine houses your spinal cord – and your spinal cord transmits all the messages to and from your major control centre, your brain. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep your energy to the levels that allow you to enjoy life when your body starts hanging in on itself.

A poor posture costs you energy. It’s like having the thermostat in your living room set to 21 degrees while all the doors and windows are open in the middle of winter. You don’t die from it but it’s a complete waste of energy.
